Happy Last Day of October!

And just like that, October has come to an end. We are almost one-quarter of the way through the school year. The holidays are coming up quickly. This week has been a real pleasure. There were so many activities taking place in our classrooms and the excitement I saw on the students' faces was amazing. I truly enjoy stopping in the classrooms and asking the kids what they are up to. They all want to share the great things that they are doing. I look forward to seeing what takes place next.

This week, we had a couple guests who stopped by. We were greeted one morning by the Chik-fil-A cow. She met the students as they got off their buses and then walked the building. The kids loved running up to her. We also had author Debbi Michiko Florence visit our 3rd and 4th graders. She talked about the process she went through in writing her book series. The students had many great questions for her.

I would like to share some news. Each year, the state of CT recognizes schools for high performance or high academic growth based on the state's Next Generation Accountability System. Elizabeth Green is being recognized for High Growth (All Students) in English Language Arts (ELA). High Growth means that we fell in the top 10% for academic growth in ELA in the state. I am proud of the efforts that our teachers give your children and I'm extremely proud of the work your kids do everyday.

Reminder: Tuesday is Election Day. Schools will be closed that day.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Artist in the Spotlight!

Thank you goes out to our art teacher, Mrs. Gajda, who has created our "Artist in the Spotlight" in our front foyer. She will be displaying different students' artwork throughout the year for all to see as they enter the building. This is a fantastic way to show the great artists we have here at E. Green.

Today's display has work from the following students: Divija Gurung(2), Arielle Gonzalez(2), Subha Aryal(K), and Joshua Grimm(Pre-K).

October Students of the Month

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:
Pre K -Luca Leupold, Maddie Goldberg, and Liam Lepoutre
Kindergarten - Maisie Westerfield, Grace Sehl, and Ryker Roberts

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Snacks

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

Dismissal - When picking up in your car...

We have run into a small issue at dismissal. If you are picking up a student and are in the drive up line, please do not get out of your car to get your child. This holds up the line. We try to load 3-5 cars at a time. Once they are loaded, they drive off and the line can move up. Exiting your car to yell to your child slows the process down for everyone. Thanks for your help with this.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.
