Weekly news and updates - January 16, 2026

LOGO

Dear NHS Families and Friends,

Good afternoon,

Happy Friday! We just completed our last full week before exams and we are heading into a 4 day week and the start of exams. I hope I don't jinx myself in saying "and we haven't had a snow day!"

On Tuesday, NHS staff continued our learning with our POD work. Staff members have been working in groups around 5 differentiated Professional Learning Pods: AI for Access, Inclusion and Instructional Innovation; Bridging Classrooms & Communities; Building Relationships, Repairing Harm; Designing for Student-Centered Learning, and Right-Sized Scaffolding for Deep Learning. All our work centers around our overall goal of making students feel a sense of belonging/connectedness which will lead to increased attendance rates, a reduction in the opportunity gap, and improved academic outcomes for all learners.

This week's learning: students demonstrated a full trauma assessment on our trauma mannequins; link crew members hosted a successful stress-relief, donut exam review; the band concert highlighted our talented musicians; and students who take theatre class shined in their performances of "Game of Tiaras (a parody of King Lear, Game of Thrones and Disney Princesses."

Congratulations to Mr. Brunetti's Advisory and Mrs. Muir (staff member) for winning a free breakfast for Themed Thursday - Career Day!

All my previous newsletters are posted on the website.

NHS IS ON THE 2025 AP HONOR ROLL

College Board announced that Newington High School has been named to the 2025 Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning Bronze distinction.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening participation. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.

Newington High School had 41% of seniors who took at least one AP Exam during high school, [37%] of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam, and [3%] of seniors who took five or more AP Exams!

Newington High School Currently has:
24 AP Courses
46 Sections of AP Courses
24 Teachers Teaching AP

College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 40 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond.

Congratulations to NHS for achieiving BRONZE LEVEL recognition!

MARKETING STUDENTS

Marketing students at Newington High School recently developed comprehensive marketing plans for potential new menu items. Through a partnership with local favorites El Pollo Guapo and GoldBurgers, students pitched their concepts directly to the business owners. Each proposal was judged on how well the product aligned with the restaurant’s brand vision, the creativity of the name, and the effectiveness of the promotional strategy. To support their ideas, students conducted market research and established strategic pricing models in class. As a reward for their hard work, the winning groups will see their creations featured on the restaurants' special menus and enjoy a free sampling of their dishes.

El Pollo Guapo: "Hittin’ The Streets" - The winning team Abigail Pratt, Sasha Taschuk, and Zofia Cygan who created a dish featuring pork belly, sweet and spicy sauce, street corn, pickled onion, and cotija cheese, served with smooth avocado and lime.  Hittin’ The Streets is currently available on the special menu for the public to enjoy.

Charlie Foucault, manager, wrote:
"I feel this group hit the mark in multiple aspects. Not only did they create something that I personally would love to eat, I also feel it would be a big hit with our customers who currently enjoy our pork belly specials. Secondly, the creativity of the name not only worked for the mission behind their dish, but also matched how we would name a special. Lastly, the pitch was absolutely perfect. Not only did it give a backstory to the dish they wanted to represent, but they were able to pitch it fluently. They nailed the descriptive words (crispy, tender, silky smooth, etc) that not only made me excited for the dish but sold it for me."

GoldBurgers: "The Pack Preem" - Selected by owner Matt Crowley, this winning creation by Mitchell Kriedel, Wiktor Kurzatkowski, and Luca Tramadeo features loaded fries topped with nacho cheese, bacon, onions, lettuce, jalapeños, and a signature beef patty. The Pack Preem will debut on the menu shortly after January 19th. The winning team will head to GoldBurgers on Saturday, January 24th, to enjoy their creation together.

Matt Crowley wrote:
"Great combination of two main items. Great cross use of pantry ingredients to make a new fun item. Overall, this is a kitchen favorite at GoldBurgers and it may be able to make the big menu in the future if it takes off!!"

EDRISING NEWS

Members of the NHS Educators Rising chapter created their project for the State EdRising competition in March. They recorded a professional development lesson and had teachers participate in simple activities to be informed on the importance of group learning in the classroom after the COVID-19 pandemic. The lesson went well, and it felt great switching our roles from students to educators. Thank you so much to the following teachers who participated: Mrs. Amorosino, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Stammen, Mrs. Toney, Mr. Palaia, and Mrs. Mehl. You were great students!
Huge thank you to Liv Harris from Newington High School Broadcasting Club for videotaping and editing our video, making it "competition ready", Ms.Batista, our advisor, and RitaMarie Haeseler-Andrade for your support.

Another successful annual Mock Competition for the Newington Deca Chapter is in the books! This week, Newington’s Deca chapter has hosted their annual Mock Competition to help prepare competitors for the CT State Competition coming up later this winter! The Sasha Taschuk, Vice President, helped to request guests to judge role plays, organize fellow students to coordinate the competitor’s, and transformed the library into a similar competitor setting they will see later this winter. New and returning competitors showed their innovative ideas in the business world through well presented role plays and got to learn new tactics from fellow peers. A special thank you to all of the judges who provided valuable feedback to help our competitors.  Guest Judges included Jake Knowlton (NHS and DECA Alum), Richard Dorval (Men's Wearhouse), Molly Rusgrove (NHS and DECA Alum), Aidee Tlilayatzi (NHS Alum), Al Cruz (NHS and DECA Alum), Michael Dipasquale (Traveler's Insurance), Amy Perotti (NHS alum and NPS Board of Education) and Matthew Plourd (NHS alum and Town council).  Well done Newington Deca!

POWERSCHOOL PORTAL FEATURE-GRADUATION PLAN PROGRESS

Students and parents/guardians can now see on their PowerSchool Student and Parent website account credits that students have completed and need to complete for graduation (this feature does not work in the mobile app). To find the “Graduation Plan Progress Screen '' on the grading portal users should click on the “Grade History" tab on the left hand side of the screen. Then on the top right of the screen click the blue button “View Graduation Plan Progress.” The screen will look similar to the picture above (based on student credit status):

Each requirement has a “status” column that shows how many credits a student has completed to date and a “completion” column that shows a visual of student progress towards that requirement:

Dark green- credits completed, based on courses students have passed and completed. When a requirement has a completion bar that is shaded completely dark green students have completed that requirement.

Light green- credits in progress, based on courses students are enrolled in for the current school year.

White- student still need to complete these requirements in future years.

Yellow- student requested course(s) in this graduation requirement that have not been completed yet This status will show up when students begin to request courses for next year.

Please note the Graduation Planner for students that transferred to Newington High School may not be accurate.

Students and parents/guardians should contact their school counselor with any questions regarding the graduation planner or requirements. Graduation requirements can also be found in the NHS Program of Studies (linked here).

Students should pay attention to announcement slides for information on who is coming and when.

This is open to any Junior or Senior. They can sign up to attend these visits in their SchooLinks accounts.

DROP OFFS/PICK UPS = IMPORTANT

All drop offs should occur at the west side of our building (in the back by the Event Center, prior to making a right onto Veteran's Drive). Students who are being dropped off should enter from the north side of our building, by the student parking lot. Doors will open at 7:05 and close at 7:34. After 7:34 am, all students will need to enter the building through our main entrance.

All pick ups should occur in the same location.

The map below outlines the student drop off in blue. You will note the "student drop off section" and the blue star(*) which indicates where the students will walk to get to the North entrance. We are asking you to abide by our protocols to keep everyone safe. Thank you!

There is absolutely NO student drop off at the gym entrance or along the cones that indicate "no parking/no drop off".

A Few Important Things to Note:

Attendance, Electronics, Parent Square, Academic Integrity

Attendance - Join us in emphasizing the importance of being in school. Attendance is critical to the success of our students. It not only contributes to academic success, but fosters relationships between students and teachers and students and their peers. NHS course work is rigorous and moves at a fast pace, so every lesson is vital to a student’s learning. When students miss school, they miss opportunities to ask questions, deepen their learning, participate in class discussions, and build connections.

We hope that families vacation during school vacation time and do their best to schedule appointments outside of school hours, or at the very least, have their student attend school prior to or immediately after an appointment. When students are pulled from school, it puts them at a disadvantage. If the choice is made to vacation during a time when school is in session, students will only be given one day per absence to submit their work.

If a student is going to be absent a Parent/Guardian must either call Magee House Office on extension 1525 or submit a note through ParentSquare directly to Corina Muir. If a note is submitted through ParentSquare a phone call is not necessary. If a call is made, a note will need to be entered in ParentSquare or brought to the Magee Office to be considered excused (for the first 9 absences for state reporting purposes. These absences, unless extenuating and cleared by administration, will count toward the loss of credit). For any absence beyond 9, a medical note, court documentation, etc. must be presented in order to be excused (for state reporting purposes only. These absences, unless extenuating and cleared by administration, will also count toward the loss of credit).

If a student is absent for medical purposes, medical documentation needs to be brought to the Magee Office office when the student returns to school. Once processed by the Magee Office, the documentation will be given to the nurses.

If a student is tardy, they must enter through the main entrance, sign in on the tardy kiosk and bring their pass to class. For delays or special schedules, they must report to the Magee Office to receive a tardy pass to get into class.

If a student is being dismissed early, a note must come from a Parent/Guardian either through ParentSquare or with a physical note brought to the Magee House Office.
NHS sends an automated message every morning at 9:45 am alerting families of any attendance change. This includes absences, late arrivals, early dismissals, and any message sent via ParentSquare. Therefore, we ask that you do not call if you receive this alert from ParentSquare if you have sent a message to Mrs. Muir via ParentSquare, only if you have not sent a message.
Electronics - Given the distraction electronics can cause and the potential for inappropriat use, here is our policy:
  • Electronic devices are to be used responsibly. Students should follow the individual teacher's classroom rules. Students should NOT have them out in class unless directed by the teacher. If a student is caught with a cell phone or electronic device in violation of our policy while in a classroom, the teacher will confiscate the phone or device, it will be brought to the house office, and it will not be returned until a parent/guardian comes to school to claim it. If a student refuses to turn over their electronic device they will be sent to the main office and the device will be confiscated by administration. Refusal to turn devices over to administration will result in the student being sent home.
  • Unauthorized audio/video taping of images (including staff), student altercations, internet postings, and use during emergency drills and procedures (ie. lockdowns, shelter in place, fire drills, etc.) will result in immediate revocation of privileges for the student. The parent/guardian will be notified and appropriate disciplinary consequences will be issued.
Parent Square - click HERE to obtain all the information about our new School Messenger.

Academic Integrity - Academic integrity is an integral aspect of any institution of education. Students are responsible for demonstrating their understanding of content standards and skills in an ethical manner. Academic dishonesty occurs when a student cheats, plagiarizes, shares assignments, or otherwise misrepresents someone else’s work or ideas as their own.
Cheating includes but is not limited to providing another student with information regarding assessments, copying another’s work, having prior knowledge of assessment materials not provided by the teacher, having unauthorized assistance in answering questions, and/or submitting work that another has completed on a student’s behalf. Plagiarism is a form of cheating that results from misrepresenting words or ideas that are not one's own. This includes the use of technology including artificial intelligence (AI). Students are subject to disciplinary and academic consequences that may impact acceptance into various national honor societies.
