Preparing Families for Potential SNAP Benefit Cuts

Good afternoon NPS families,

As the government shutdown continues, we understand that many families in our community will be affected by the possible loss of food assistance. Should SNAP benefits be paused in November, Newington Public Schools is here to help. I have complied a list of information and resources for families who are impacted by the loss of SNAP benefits below.

Additionally, I encourage eligible families to apply for free and reduced-price meals if you have not yet done so.

The following are links to local resources and information that can be beneficial to families:

  • Families can call 2-1-1 or chat with 211 electronically.
  • On the blue navigation bar, click CHAT to get to a live person Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
  • Or click on the red Ask 211 chat box for resources 24/7/365.  
*Newington Food Bank (860) 665-8590
  • They are open for food distribution by appointment only on Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • You must qualify for assistance before you can get food. Call first to confirm and schedule your appointment.
*Foodshare (860) 856-4321 or text FOODSHARE to 855-11
  • They come every other Thursday to the Market Square parking lot (often referred to as Constitution Square)
  • They suggest you arrive by 8:30 as distribution is from 8:45-9:15
  • Bring a shopping bag to put your food in
  • You do not need to qualify or live in Newington.
