Mrs. Stacey Michaud, 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year

It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year for the Newington Public Schools is Mrs. Stacey Michaud, Special Education Teacher at John Paterson Elementary School. Each year, all teachers have the opportunity to nominate members of the professional staff who they feel have contributed in a special way to the teaching and learning experiences taking place in Newington.  Mrs. Stacey Michaud was selected based upon her exceptional skills, and dedication to children and the teaching profession.  She values the ideals of team work. She is intelligent, a strong communicator, an advocate for all students, and a strong believer that public education is the vehicle to prepare all children for participation in our society.   She is an individual who is poised and articulate, with an outgoing nature.  She possesses the superior ability to inspire learning in all students.  Mrs. Michaud will represent Newington in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program.

Mrs. Michaud is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education and a minor in Psychology. She completed her Master of Science in Special Education at Central Connecticut State University.

Mrs. Michaud has been teaching in Newington for 26 years as a special education teacher. Since 2017, Mrs. Michaud has been teaching in a self-contained classroom which she created and implemented curriculum and procedures for her students. She teaches in a multiple grade level classroom which mirrors a general education classroom. She established an environment that has great variables and even greater rewards. She provides highly engaging learning opportunities for her students.  She recognizes each child’s individual gifts. She provides an environment where her students feel safe, supported and important.

When asked by the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Selection Committee to share her personal feelings and beliefs about teaching, Stacey Michaud indicated, “I give myself a daily reminder that each child has unique talents. Teachers can help children discover these by not only engaging the mind, but the heart and soul.  The first step is to welcome students into a positive learning space. From what I have observed, this is a place where students take risks in a predictable environment.  It is a setting where we ask each other questions to challenge our thinking. A place where children have a voice and feel empowered.  It is evident that every child has frequent opportunities to contribute to this community each day.  There is laughter, play and fun.  I believe that love is the magic ingredient in this space.”

Dr. Maureen Brummett, Superintendent of Schools, indicated “Mrs. Michaud’s passion for her work, ability to inspire student learning, commitment, and enthusiasm strongly support her selection as Newington’s Teacher of the Year.”
